Installation Questions
We include installation instructions with every order. Below is a brief description of the installation procedure for mounting your backsplash. You should allow yourself a free day or weekend so that you can install your backsplash without interruption.
Check the wall: Make sure the wall is dry and clean. It is recommended that you lightly sand the painted wall surface where the backsplash will be mounted. This is to insure that the mastic (adhesive) will adhere well to the wall.
For permanent installation first decide where you want to mount your tile. Then determine the area the tile will cover. Divide it in half and mark a vertical line using a bubble area. Place a straight wood molding at the point where the base of the tiles will set. Check the molding with a bubble level to make sure it is level and straight. It can then be taped or nailed to the wall. This is to prevent the ceramic tiles from sliding down the wall from gravity. Lay the bottom tiles first. You lay on each side of the vertical line unless the number of tiles require you to center the middle tile on the vertical line.
Apply the adhesive:
Apply the mastic with a notched trowel. Hold the trowel at a 45 degree angle and spread a thin layer of adhesive. Work in small sections to prevent the adhesive from drying too quickly. Use a slight twisting motion to position the tile, then use the bubble level to make sure the tile is square and level. Most ceramic tile is self-spacing. If yours are not, use plastic spacers on each corner of the tile to insure even grout lines.
Working from the first tile, continue laying the tiles in a row (flush against any spacers). Wipe off any excess adhesive that oozes up between the tiles.
If you need to cut a tile, score the tile with a tile cutter. Use tile nippers or a saw to cut away the area carefully.
When you have laid all the tiles, wipe off any excess adhesive with a damp cloth. Use a rounded stick or dowel to clean between the tiles.
Allow the adhesive to dry, usually overnight.
Grouting:
After letting the adhesive set you grout according to the manufacturer's directions. Be sure to get all grout off the tile surface. It should be very clean and shiny.
